John's Journal

Day Nineteen Day Twentyone

Day Twenty

Mileage- none

[ John is in Washington D.C. and manages to tell us nothing about the trees, much less the museums, government buildings, etc. Hello???]

I awoke to the sounds of the street. Trucks and cars going by, people talking, even a few talking loudly. It reminded me of home. San Francisco, that is, where I used to wake up to the same sounds. I have had too many nights where I had no noise whatsoever lately (not too many things around the campground at 6,000 feet). Not that I was surprised by it all, but oddly comforted in a way.

My sister, Susan, and I spent a leisurely morning over coffee and deciding what to do until she had to work at 4pm. We walked around, checking out some things in her neighborhood, but mainly we just hung out together, seeing the places where she goes to write and work and where her daughter, Sarah, lives. Sarah is madly studying for finals and writing a paper, so not much time available, but looks like breakfast tomorrow before I start. I really enjoy seeing the spaces that people function in; where they go to get inspiration, coffee, lunch, etc...

The neighborhoods are really great, ranging from a row of Ethiopian restaurants and shops, to the gay part of DC (again, just like home). And lots of the style of apartments (and some businesses are in these, as well) where you walk up a few steps to go in and they stretch way back. Somewhat like the place I had in Cincinnati. Shotgun-style and Brownstone I think are terms for some of these.

The weather was. . . (isn't there supposed to be a link here?).

I must admit, I did stop by a computer store and bought a new modem. One that won't suck so much power from this little guy. It also is faster, so that will be nice. I had been away from stores like this for so long, that I think I needed a fix. Naw, I could stay away for longer, honest. Anyway, I got caught up on phone calls and e-mail. Patrick said he was missing a day, so I sent him that one, so look for a new day from Roswell to outside of Houston.

I really welcomed the non-rushed pace of the entire day. We talked, got caught up on each other's lives and re-connected. Now, I must get ready for getting back on the road, again. I plan to take a smaller highway for probably 2/3rds of the way to Indy (Hwy 50), and perhaps go through and see my other cousins in Columbus, OH. I will probably go through Cincinnati, too, to see where I used to live, maybe hook up with a friend there, too. So, that would put me in Indy on Saturday, I think, depending on how it all goes.

Oh, yeah, depending on the weather, too.
